vitiligo pictures and explanation

vitiligo picturesVitiligo disease is a condition where skin depigmentation is experienced. It is most obvious to people with dark skins but all races are affected by this disease. Skin depigmentation is the loss of skin color. A person is affected in every 200 people and approximately half of the patients have family members who are affected by vitiligo disease.

Vitiligo disease is caused by destruction in melanocytes. Melanocytes are skin cells responsible for skin pigmentation or in layman’s term, melanocytes gives color to the skin. Vitiligo disease causes swelling or inflammation in the dermis and also, melanocytes are not seen microscopically.

Vitiligo causes

There is no apparent cause of vitiligo disease. Thus, vitiligo disease is idiopathic. With the researches conducted, autoimmune disorder is the most acceptable cause of vitiligo disease. When we say that vitiligo disease is an autoimmune disorder, the individual’s immune systems develops a reaction against its own cells resulting cell destruction.

Another theory worst mentioning is that, vitiligo disease is a nerve disorder. This is concluded as most loss of pigmentation found on the affected skin is associated with nerve damage

There is no sex or race predilection among clients with vitiligo disease.  Early symptoms of vitiligo disease appear before twenty years of age. Vitiligo disease does not just affect the physical health of the client but it also affects the clients psychologically.

Physical appearance

  • Most of the people suffering from vitiligo disease experience skin abnormality as early as childhood. Skin depigmentation starts at a very young age.
  •  The areas of white patches are seen first on the face and on the back of the hands, which are directly exposed to sunlight.
  • Vitiligo disease has a mirror effect. This means that this occurs the same on either sides of the body which is called segmental vitiligo.
  • Clients with vitiligo disease can have Koebner phenomenon, in which skin depigmentation occurs on the site of abrasion and surgical scars and also in psoriasis and eczema.
  • Leukotrichia can also happen. This is a condition where the hair is also discolored on areas where white patches are seen.

Psychological distress

Clients suffering from vitiligo disease can also experience emotional discomfort. The main problem occurs with disturbance in body image. People surrounding these clients may also tend to socially isolate them that may add insult to injury. Psychological discomfort varies from one client to another. Acceptance plays a big role in one’s emotional well-being.

Mild embarrassment to severe social anxiety can happen especially to those who have large exposed white patches.

Several treatments for vitiligo disease are available to manage and eventually reverse skin depigmentation. However, treatments available are not universally accepted because of the limitations it possesses.

  • Sunscreen: Sunscreen is indicated for all clients with vitiligo disease. This prevents sunburn to affected skin areas and also prevents the skin from further darkening that makes white patches more visible.
  • Camouflage: Makeup or dyes are also available to hide affected areas of vitiligo disease. For clients interested on camouflage treatment, they may visit a local camouflage clinic for further instructions.
  •  Photochemotherapy: This is the most common treatment for vitiligo disease nowadays. This is combined with psoralen drug therapy.
  • Corticosteroids: Oral and topical steroids are administered. This gives a significant improvement to vitiligo clients. Almost half of the clients with vitiligo disease respond to steroids therapy well.
  • Skin grafting: This is advisable to client with stable vitiligo disease, A portion of the skin from other body parts is dissected and are attached to the affected area that stimulates restoration of skin pigmentation.

These are typically can be found on the extremities. Diagnosis can be difficult on dark skin where the rash is hidden, oval appearance of the lesions is a valuable sign (see vitiligo pictures below).
